What Is Brand Licensing?
Under a licensing agreement, a brand owner ('licensor') temporarily grants brand usage rights to a third party ('licensee'), for use in products, services or promotions. In return for these rights, the licensee pays a royalty on sales. The agreement specifies the conditions required to protect the brand's integrity.
Licensing involves the management of a broad web of commercial relationships across the value chain.
The global market for licensed merchandise is worth over $US 115 billion, over 60% deriving from the USA and Canada. The Australasian licensing industry is worth an estimated $1.6 billion at retail. Today there are dozens of brand licensors and over 500 licensees comprising local manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of consumer products.
